Putting words together
Choosing por or para
Por and para
Distinguish purpose/destination from cause, route, or exchange.
The pattern
- Para often marks a goal, recipient, or deadline.
- Por often marks a reason, route, duration, or exchange.
Este regalo es para ti.
This gift is for you.
Why it works: Para identifies who the gift is intended for.
Notice the difference
Gracias por el regalo.
Thank you for the gift.
Why it works: Por introduces the reason for the thanks.
Estudio para aprender. / Camino por el parque.
I study in order to learn. / I walk through the park.
Why it works: Para introduces a purpose; por describes the route.
One thing to watch for
English “for” has several jobs. Ask whether you mean purpose/recipient (para) or reason/exchange (por), rather than translating the word alone.
