A little more to say
Connecting your ideas
Logical connectors
Make the relationship between ideas clear.
The pattern
- Porque = because; pero = but; así que = so; aunque = although/even if.
Quería salir, pero empezó a llover.
I wanted to go out, but it started raining.
Why it works: Pero contrasts the wish to go out with the rain that got in the way.
Notice the difference
Empezó a llover, así que me quedé en casa.
It started raining, so I stayed home.
Why it works: Así que introduces a result. Porque would introduce a reason: Me quedé en casa porque llovía.
One thing to watch for
Aunque llueve presents the rain as a fact. Aunque llueva can mean “even if it rains,” but it can also background rain both people already know about. Subjunctive does not always mean doubt.
