Everyday sentences
Using me, te, and se with a verb
Reflexive and pronominal verbs
Use a verb with a pronoun referring to its subject; some verbs change meaning with it.
The pattern
- Me, te, se, nos, os, se.
- Me levanto; voy a levantarme / me voy a levantar.
Me levanto temprano.
I get up early.
Why it works: Me refers back to yo: I am the person getting up.
Notice the difference
Levanto la caja.
I lift the box.
Why it works: Without me, levantar can mean lifting something else.
One thing to watch for
Some verbs with these pronouns have a distinct meaning rather than “yourself”: me quedo means “I stay.” Learn the verb and pronoun together.
