Saying tengo, hago, and other yo forms
Irregular present yo forms
Some common verbs have a special yo form in the present.
Endings refresher
Hacer: present
Hacer has a special yo form in the present; the other forms keep hac-.
| Person | Hacer |
|---|---|
| yo | hago |
| tú | haces |
| él / ella / usted | hace |
| nosotros / nosotras | hacemos |
| vosotros / vosotras | hacéis |
| ellos / ellas / ustedes | hacen |
yo hago; nosotros hacemos
- Other special yo forms include tengo, salgo, pongo, conozco and sé.
- These charts use tú. Vosotros / vosotras is mainly used in Spain; ustedes uses the final row. Vos forms vary by region.
The pattern
- Tener → tengo; hacer → hago; salir → salgo.
- Poner → pongo; conocer → conozco; saber → sé.
Hago la cena.
I make dinner.
Why it works: The yo form of hacer is hago, not haco.
Notice the difference
Mi marido hace la cena.
My husband makes dinner.
Why it works: The él form is hace; the special yo change does not carry over.
One thing to watch for
Knowing the yo form does not give every other form: tengo, but tienes and tenemos.
